Rhythm & Melody

For this piece I chose to dissect the song Uptown Girl, by Billy Joel by interpreting the song in terms of its rhythm, structure, mood, and narrative. Considering how to create tempo, melody, and suspense in imagery I used my own life story to depict my journey throughout the city.

Moving to college in the big city was a much different environment than I had back home. Four years have since gone by and I am now fully immersed in Cincinnati and all it has to offer. Becoming a "uptown girl" I now see the city through a lens of opportunity, culture, and adventure. With so many amazing spots and hidden cultural gems throughout the city, I can look upon the gazebo at Eden Park, to Findlay Market in Over the Rhine, to TQL Stadium in downtown, to the John A Roebling Suspension Bridge spanning over the Ohio River to Kentucky. The possibilities are endless and it is up to one's self to explore what is out there.

Assembling this piece I captured 40 scenes from across the city from Clifton to downtown, and created a bird's eye view in one big canvas. By gazing throughout this collage, I wanted the viewer to feel as if they could travel throughout the city without even leaving their house. Pairing rhythm and melody with this collage, anyone can become the free spirited uptown girl, even if you are from a small town.
